Anthony McCarthy pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of diamorphine

Anthony McCarthy (21) of 190 Battery Heights, Athlone, appeared at Athlone District Court last Tuesday and pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of diamorphine for sale and supply on March 6, 2007. Inspector Jarlath Folan told the court that as a result of a search by gardai at the defendant’s address at 8.20pm a quantity of diamorphine, valued at €500, was found. He said that the defendant admitted that the drugs “were for his own use and for sale and supply”.
The court also heard that the defendant had 29 total previous convictions which included drug related offences, public order, theft, and firearms and offensive weapons offences. When he took the stand, drug addict McCarthy said that he was “only selling enough to make a few pound”. He said that eight bags of drugs were found which would normally last two days. He told Judge Conal Gibbons that he was currently claiming the dole. “Is it a part-time hobby to sell drugs as well as claiming dole and selling?” asked Judge Gibbons.
