Samara Williams, aged 22, claimed she was forced into the crime but a judge at Doncaster Crown Court said every prison visitor was aware of the consequences of trying to pass drugs to inmates. The court was told the mum-of-two was so upset at being caught that she physically attacked a custody officer at Doncaster police station when she was placed in a cell for the first time. She pleaded guilty to possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply and a separate charge of common assault and was given a two-and-a-half year prison sentence.
Prosecutor Megan Rhys said staff at Lindholme Prison became suspicious of Williams when she visited her boyfriend because she was seen putting something inside a packet of crisps. Before she could hand them to her boyfriend the bag was seized and two wraps of heroin and crack cocaine found inside. After her arrest she would not co-operate in the police cells and custody detention officer Samantha Higgins suffered sprained fingers and scratches to her arms when Williams attacked her.
She also refused to say who had told her to take the drugs to Lindholme from her home in Bracken Road, Wincobank, Sheffield. Her barrister, David Taylor, described it as "a very sad case" because she had no previous convictions and two very young children, aged six and four, to look after. The judge, Recorder Andrew Campbell, QC, jailed Williams for two and a half years, including one month for assualting the custody officer
