Barotsz Janiszewski, 28, was one of three Polish nationals caught trying to smuggle 15 kilos of the Class A drug into the UK while they were working on the DFDS Queen of Scandinavia ferry on November 28, 2006.The three men cycled off the ferry on push bikes, before being stopped by customs officials who wanted to search their rucksacks, Newcastle Crown Court was told. But the men fled before their bags could be examined, ditching the drugs nearby.Karol Piotr Tomaszewski, 31, and Sebastian Piasecki, 23, were both caught, arrested and charged with importing cocaine.Yet despite Janiszewski leaving his wallet and passport on board the ship he made it back to his home in Poland, before handing himself in to investigating officers.
All three men said they were given the rucksacks from another man onboard, and believed they were smuggling cigarettes and vodka into the UK.At a trial in 2007 Tomaszewski and Piasecki said they were paid 200 euros to carry the rucksacks off the ship. Both men were cleared of being knowingly concerned in the importation of cocaine. Janiszewski, who was brought back to the UK to face trial, was cleared of the same charge. All three men were released from custody.
