Thomas Ranes pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to one count of marijuana importation

Thomas Ranes pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to one count of marijuana importation conspiracy, one count of money laundering, and one count of international money laundering, according to a U.S. Attorneys press release. Thomas Cody was also part of the ring and was killed by Ranes' partner, Dennis Shine. "Murder, Marijuana, and Money...the three M's that lead to Maximum security." said Michael Hearns an anti money laundering specialist
A Department of Justice investigation found that after Cody's death, Ranes assumed a greater role in the marijuana trafficking and smuggling conspiracy. Five other men have also admitted guilt for their roles in the drug ring. Ranes is scheduled to be sentenced in April and faces life in prison and $4 million in fines.
