Canadians: Robert Michael Steinebach,Candice Maree Brayton

Robert Michael Steinebach and 24-year-old Candice Maree Brayton were arrested at the Brisbane International Airport yesterday after arriving on a flight from Hong Kong.
It is alleged the pair were trying to import between six and 10 kilograms of cocaine which was found in the false bottom of a suitcase.
Brayton appeared briefly in court this morning and was remanded in custody until a further committal mention hearing next month.
Steinebach denies any involvement but his application for bail was refused to allow federal police more time to establish his connection to Brayton. He is due to again face court via video link on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Northern Territory police have arrested two men at Darwin Airport for alleged drug possession.
Police say an estimated 65 grams of cannabis was found in a 22-year-old man's bag as he tried to board a plane for Groote Eylandt yesterday.
A 48-year-old man was found to have 35 grams of the drug hidden in his pockets on the same flight.

The 22-year-old will face court in Darwin this afternoon, while the 48-year-old will appear in Alyangula Court next week.

I think the Australian government should release Candace and let her serve a fair trial in Canada. She's a sweet young girl with a heart of gold and she should be home with her family and friends.

We're praying for her because we know the real Candace would never do something like this unless she was put up to it...for all we know she didn't have a choice.

Do I believe Candace is involved in this? Yes. Do I think Candace ever had the money to put this kind of a deal together? Not on your life. Candace is a party girl and likes to put a lot of blow up her nose, but she wasn't connected enough or fluid enough to put something like this together. I figure she's a mule and nothing more.

I believe candace was used, but grew up in a house that drugs were acceptable and a lesson hard learned, that the people around her should take note, and clean up their lives. Candace will pay the price for all of you

Men like Steinbach hunt for girls like my friend Candice, I'm sure she was not the first he used to move his drugs. I just hope that the police find no trace of her on the area where the drugs were hidden and show a little mercy.

as i begin my during to brisbane to see my daughter this week i would just like to make a few comments..
candace has made a terrible mistake and will pay for it the rest of her life...but she is still my daughter and i love her with all my heart..her involvement with the wrong people and her life style decisions she has made in the past where making her life head in the wrong direction...candace will take this experience and turn her life around and use the time in brisbane wisely..she is a good person who made a very bad decision....she is probably better off in the australian prison system then canada's..she will be treated fairly in brisbane..candace did not grow up in a house of drugs..you know why..because i raised her as a single parent..through-out her teen years on vancouver island she was very productive and was a normal teenager....some people have to learn respect for the law the hard way....i guess...candace will become a better person because of this unfortunate experience of poor judgement.....
when you think of candace..smile..she is a good soul
i love you hon

I am praying for Candace and her Dad on his journey to hold his daughters hand. You mean the world to your Dad Candace, and I hope and pray that this will just be a stepping stone in your life, and everything will work out for you.
Good luck to all of you.

I feel bad for the friends and family who will have to deal with this in the coming months, but not for her at all. I was so shocked when I found this out, I couldn't see anyone that wasn't in a desperate situation doing something this dumb. It took a long time for it to sink in, really sink in, that she had actually tried to get away with this BS.

it doesn't take a rocket scientist to think "if I get caught with this, I could go to jail for a very very long time, and it could ruin the rest of my life".

to have done this, taking a risk like this that her family and friends will have to deal with is really dumb and in my opinion really selfish. no disrespect intended, I just see anything related to drugs and especially drug trafficking as really really selfish.

I do know the man she was with, all I can say is I am sorry for this girl and her family. She really did get mixed up in the wrong crowd if she was with him. I see 10 years later he hasn't changed a ounce, still praying on girls half his age and obviously still using the nose candy and more. I pray she is given some compassion from the judge, I also see he has ramaained as stand up as ever and denied even knowing her right off the bat - leaving her to take all the blame - pathetic. If anyone does know what became of this I would really be interested to know - if you could post the trial results on this blog I would appreiciate it. The sad thing is this man has (at least) 2 children, I pray they choose a different path then the sperm donor. Good luck to the family of this poor girl - I am sure yes she made her own desicions and she did get her self into this mess - but as someone who has seen it first hand - she might have had a choice but it wouldn't have been easy for her to oppose anything.
